MLB News & Notes: May 7
Catch up on the news from Tuesday and the fantasy impacts that follow.
Seiya Suzuki (OF - CHC)
Suzuki will begin a rehab assignment with AAA Iowas on Wednesday. He’ll play there for two days and hopes to return to the Cubs this weekend.
Frankie Montas (SP - CIN)
Montas was activated from the IL before his start on Tuesday, and Nick Martini was heading back to AAA. Montas was solid in his return, throwing six innings while allowing one earned run and striking out seven.
TJ Friedl (OF - CIN)
Friedl was activated from the IL on Tuesday, and Bubba Thompson returned to AAA. Friedl led off and went 0-4 with a strikeout.
Luis Rengifo (2B,SS,3B,OF - LAA)
Rengifo was held out of Tuesday’s game once again. Rengifo continues to battle an illness that has kept him out for four games.
Paul Sewald (RP - ARI)
Sewald was activated from the IL on Tuesday, and Scott McGough was sent to AAA. Before the game, the DBacks said Sewald would return to the closing role for the DBacks.
Cody Bellinger (OF - CHC)
Cody Bellinger was activated from the IL on Tuesday, and Alexander Canairo returned to AAA. In his first game back, Bellinger hit a home run.
Keegan Thompson (SP - CHC)
Thompson was recalled from AAA, and Daniel Palencia was placed on the IL with a right shoulder strain.
Darrell Hernaiz (2B - OAK)
Hernaiz left Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury. He’ll undergo an MRI with more news on Wednesday. The A’s think it’s at least a sprain, which will result in some time on the IL.
Alek Thomas (OF - ARI)
Thomas felt something in his hamstring during Sunday’s game in Reno. He took Monday off and went to test it on Tuesday. He didn’t like how it felt, so he’s heading back to Arizona for an MRI. He was expected to be activated from the IL on Tuesday, but that is obviously on hold.
Victor Robles (OF - WAS)
Robles was activated from the IL on Tuesday, so Alex's call was returned to AAA. Call hit .313 with a stolen base, and he’ll likely head back to Washington sometime this season.
Brandon Lowe (2B - TB)
Lowe started his rehab assignment at AAA Durham on Tuesday. He hopes to return this weekend if all goes well.
A.J. Puk (P - MIA)
Puk began his rehab assignment on Tuesday with three straight singles and a hit batter. He will head to the Marlins bullpen when he returns to the Marlins.
Oswald Peraza (SS - NYY)
Peraza began a rehab assignment on Tuesday. He proceeded to homer in his first game.
Nick Pivetta (SP - BOS)
Pivetta will return from the IL on Wednesday to face Chris Sale in Atlanta. It appears Pivetta will take Naoyuki Uwasawa’s spot on the roster.
Brayan Bello (SP - BOS)
Bello made his first rehab start on Tuesday and threw 2.2 innings with five strikeouts on 52 pitches. Bello could return to the Red Sox rotation this weekend or the beginning of next week.
Garrett Whitlock (SP - BOS)
Whitlock threw a two-inning bullpen on Tuesday and is next scheduled for live batting practice on Friday. If all goes well, Whitlock could make a rehab start on May 15 and hopes to return to the Red Sox on May 20.
Jasson Dominguez (OF - NYY)
Dominguez is progressing nicely in his rehab. He should start his rehab games in another week or so. If all goes well, he could be back with the Yankees in June.
JP Crawford (SS - SEA)
Crawford is progressing nicely in the cage, and the goal is to have Crawford do a brief rehab assignment at the beginning of next week.
Willson Contreras (C - STL)
Contreras took a swing from JD Martinez off his arm on Tuesday and left with a fractured arm. He’s expected to miss 6-8 weeks, and Ivan Herrera should see plenty of playing time as the Cardinals' primary backstop.
Ryan Pepiot (SP - TB)
The CT scan was negative on Pepiot’s leg after taking a 107 mph line drive off of it. Cash said Pepiot will likely go on the IL due to the contusion.
