MLB News & Notes: May 5
Catch up on the news from Sunday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Evan Phillips (RP - LAD)
The Dodgers placed Phillips on the IL with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Early reports say it’s as mild as possible, so the Dodgers hope Phillips will only be out the minimum. The Dodgers activated Blake Treinen from the IL to take Phillips's spot. Daniel Hudson appears to be the next man up for saves while Phillips is out.
Jeimer Candelario (1B,3B - CIN)
Candelario was scratched from Sunday’s game with a shin injury. Candelario has been battling an illness lately and now a shin injury. He was heating up at the plate, so hopefully, he’ll return soon.
Ryan Pepiot (SP - TB)
Pepiot had to leave Sunday’s start after a 107 mph line drive hit him in the leg. After the game, the X-rays came back negative. It’ll likely be a significant contusion, and he’ll be evaluated as his next start gets closer.
Kyle Manzardo (1B - CLE)
With Steven Kwan heading to the IL, the Guardians are calling up their #2 prospect, Kyle Manzardo. Manzardo was hitting .303 with nine home runs in 29 games. He has been heating up lately, with four home runs over the last seven games.
Grayson Rodriguez (SP - BAL)
Rodriguez threw off the flat ground today as he began his throwing program. The goal is to keep Rodriguez ramping up and throw some bullpens this week. After that, the team will decide if he needs a rehab start.
Esteury Ruiz (OF - OAK)
Ruiz left Saturday after diving for a ball and injuring his wrist. On Sunday, the A’s said Ruiz would have an MRI done on Monday to determine the severity of the injury.
Josh Lowe (OF - TB)
Lowe was pulled in the 5th inning of Sunday’s rehab game and was given the hug treatment. He hit two home runs on Saturday and seems good to go. Lowe is expected to rejoin the Rays to start the week.
Tom Murphy (C - SF)
The Giants placed Tom Murphy on the IL with a knee sprain. With Patrick Bailey on the concussion IL, the Giants called up Jackson Reetz to add more catching depth. Reetz hit a home run as a pinch hitter in the 9th inning off Jose Alvarado.
Daulton Jeffries (SP - SF)
Jeffries was recalled to join the Giants roster, and Mitch White was DFA’d. Jeffries has troubles in the rotation but should add some depth in the bullpen.
Mason Black (SP - SF)
Black will be called up on Monday to make his major league debut. He has allowed three earned runs over 26.2 innings pitched for a 1.01 ERA and 29 strikeouts over his six starts. He hopes to bring some strong pitching to a struggling Giants team.
Joe Musgrove (SP - SD)
The Padres placed Musgrove on the IL with right elbow inflammation. Other reports say it’s triceps tendinitis. If it’s minor, Musgrove may miss a couple of weeks; if it’s severe, it’ll be at least a month.
Wyatt Langford (OF - TEX)
Langford is heading to the IL with a hamstring injury. He’s expected to miss 3-4 weeks as it is slightly worse than a Grade 1 strain. The Rangers have plenty of outfielders already, so we’ll have to wait and see who gains more playing time. Ezequiel Duran started at 3B while Josh Smith moved to SS, and Corey Seager was the DH on Sunday.
Spencer Turnbull (SP - PHI)
The Phillies informed Turnbull that he’ll head to the bullpen as a multi-inning reliever. Turnbull has been great in the starting rotation this year, but Taijuan Walker's return meant someone had to go to the bullpen.
Mike Clevinger (SP - CWS)
Clevinger is expected to be activated and make his season debut in the White Sox rotation on Monday. With Clevinger returning, we’d expect Brad Keller to leave the rotation, but we’ll see what takes place on Monday.
Luis Robert Jr. (OF - CWS)
Robert is rehabbing nicely from his hip flexor strain. He’s expected to begin a rehab assignment in a week.
Wenceel Perez (OF - DET)
Perez was scratched from Sunday’s game with an illness. He’s considered day-to-day.
Eduardo Rodriguez (SP - ARI)
The DBacks said they will do some new scans and testing early this week to see how ERod is healing and get him started on a throwing program.
