MLB News & Notes: May 28
Check out the news from Tuesday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Kodai Senga (SP - NYM)
Senga continues to battle his way back from his shoulder injury. He tries to ramp up but continues to find setback after setback. Now the Mets say Senga will likely return after the All-Star break in July.
Francisco Alvarez (C - NYM)
Some positive news out of Queens, as Alvarez is set to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday. He took batting practice on Tuesday and felt great. Alvarez is way ahead of schedule. The time to stash Alvarez is coming to an end, so some make that addition quickly.
Spencer Schwellenbach (SP - ATL)
Schwellenbach is getting the call to join the Braves and make the start on Wednesday. He is the #3 prospect in the Braves system. He has a 1.80 ERA over eight starts between A+ and AA, with 51 strikeouts over 45 innings pitched. I am going to watch this first start before getting too excited about adding Schwellenbach.
Nathan Eovald (SP - TEX)
Eovaldi returned from the IL on Tuesday and made the start, pushing Dane Dunning’s start to Wednesday. Eovaldi only threw three innings, throwing 37 pitches in his return. Andrew Heaney came in after Eovaldi. Yerry Rodriguez was sent back to AAA to make room for Eovaldi.
Evan Carter (OF - TEX)
Carter was placed on the IL with back tightness, clearing a roster spot for Wyatt Langford, who was activated from the IL. In his return, Langford went 0-3 with a strikeout.
Eli Morgan (SP - CLE)
Morgan was activated from the IL, and Xzavion Curry was sent back to AAA. Morgan will return and add depth to the Guardians bullpen.
Andre Pallante (SP - STL)
Pallante will make the start for the Cardinals on Wednesday. He’s been working out of the bullpen for the Cardinals but was starting at AAA before being recalled this week. Pallante had only thrown five innings once, so do not expect much from his start in Great American Small Park on Wednesday.
LaMonte Wade Jr (1B,OF - SF)
Wade was placed on the IL with a grade two hamstring strain and will miss at least a month. That is a huge blow for the Giants offense. Trenton Brooks was recalled from AAA and started at 1B on Tuesday night. Brooks was hitting .308 with four home runs and six steals at AAA this season. Wilmer Flores is expected to get most of the at-bats at 1B, with Brooks also filling in.
Tyler Fitzgerald (SS,OF - SF)
Fitzgerald was recalled from AAA as Ryan McKenna was DFA’d. Fitzgerald was hitting .269 with a home run and four steals in his first run this season with the Giants. In his six games at AAA from his recent demotion, Fitzgerald hit .440 with six home runs and a stolen base.
Spencer Howard (SP - SF)
Howard was recalled on Tuesday while Drew Pomeranz was DFA’d. Howard did not allow a run over four innings on Tuesday but had a 5.90 ERA over ten starts with 57 strikeouts over 39.2 innings pitched at AAA.
Max Scherzer (SP - TEX)
Scherzer has thrown a few small bullpens in recent weeks, and he’s scheduled to throw a full bullpen on Wednesday. Then, a better idea of Scherzer’s rehab will be made.
Jon Gray (SP - TEX)
Gray is scheduled to throw off a mound on Wednesday to assess his progress in returning from his recent groin injury.
Francisco Lindor (SS- NYM)
Lindor took a pitch off his finger as he attempted to bunt late in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader. X-rays were negative after the game, and he was in the lineup for Game 2, so we may have avoided a big injury.
Vinnie Pasquantino (1B - KC)
Pasquantino left Tuesday’s game after taking a shin from Byron Buxton to his knee in which Vinnie’s knee bounced back. X-rays were negative, and Vinnie P is day-to-day with a lower leg contusion.
Tyler O’Neill (OF - BOS)
TON was out of the Red Sox lineup again on Tuesday, and we found out he flew back to Boston to get imagining done on his knee. The Red Sox are saying it is more precautionary and to give some assurance that the knee injury isn’t too serious. We shall see.
Mike Clevinger (SP - CWS)
Clevinger was placed on the IL with elbow soreness. He received a cortisone shot and will be shut down for 48 hours, but the White Sox expect him back after the 15-day IL stint is up. Jake Woodford was recalled to take his spot on the roster. Woodford allowed three runs over 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Martin Perez (SP - PIT)
Perez was placed on the IL with a groin injury, and Ke’Bryan Hayes was activated.
Joey Bart (C- PIT)
Bart was placed on the IL with his thumb injury, and the Pirates recalled Grant Koch from AAA. Koch hit .167 with a home run at AAA while striking out 42.4% of the time.
Diego Castillo (RP - MIN)
The Twins called up Castillo to add some depth to the bullpen, sending Kody Funderburk back to AAA. Castillo was once an elite reliever in the Mariners system, but injuries have derailed his success in recent years.
DJ LeMahieu (1B,3B - NYY)
LeMahieu was activated from the IL on Tuesday. He started at 2B and hit 9th.
J.D. Davis (1B,3B - OAK)
Davis left Tuesday’s game after getting hit on the hand by a pitch. Tyler Soderstrom entered the game for Davis. Davis will be further evaluated and, for now, is day-to-day.
