MLB News & Notes: May 2
Catch up on the news from Thursday with the fantasy implications that follow.
Walker Buehler (SP - LAD)
The Dodgers will activate Buehler to make his 2024 debut on Monday. He has yet to make a big league start since June of 2022. He made six rehab starts, allowing ten earned runs over 21.2 IP with 21 strikeouts and nine walks.
Kyle Bradish (SP - BAL)
Bradish was activated from the IL on Thursday and made his season debut. He threw 4.2 innings while allowing one earned run and striking out five. He looked good with his fastball getting up to 97. Yohan Ramirez was DFA’d.
Randy Rodriguez (RP - SF)
Rodriguez was promoted to the Giants to join the bullpen and make his first trip to the bigs. He had a 1.69 ERA over 10.2 IP with ten strikeouts at AAA. Daulton Jeffries was sent back to AAA after pitching the bulk innings instead of Blake Snell on Wednesday.
Jesus Luzardo (SP - MIA)
Luzardo pitched a successful bullpen on Thursday. He won’t be traveling with the Marlins on their upcoming road trip; instead, he’ll be making a rehab start sometime next week. Hopefully, it will be just one start.
Masataka Yoshida (OF - BOS)
The Red Sox continue to test Yoshida’s injured thumb, and the latest news is that he may require surgery. If Yoshida goes under the knife, he will be a sure drop in most formats.
Christian Scott (SP - NYM)
The Mets are finally doing it. They are calling up one of their top pitching prospects, Christian Scott. He has made five starts at AAA and has a 3.20 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 25.1 innings pitched. Scott will make his MLB debut on Saturday. No corresponding move has been announced yet.
Nate Eovaldi (SP - TEX)
Eovaldi cruised into the 6th innings on Thursday but left the game with a right groin injury. Eovaldi will have an MRI on Friday, but Eovaldi was not overly concerned. He wanted to throw some warm-up pitches, but Bochy pulled him out of precaution.
TJ Friedl (OF - CIN)
After being sidelined for some time with his fractured wrist, Friedl began his rehab assignment on Thursday. If all goes well, we should see him back with the Reds next week.
Ryan Noda (1B - OAK)
The A’s optioned Noda to AAA on Thursday. This will likely clear a spot on the roster for J.D. Davis, who will return from the IL on Friday. Red-hot Tyler Nevin should see plenty of at-bats at 1B with Noda in AAA.
Gavin Williams (SP - CLE)
Williams was re-evaluated on Wednesday and cleared to start throwing. He threw on Thursday, and all went well. According to the Guardians, Williams is back on the road to recovery. He’ll need to ramp back up, so it will still be a few weeks before we see him in the bigs.
Christian Javier (SP - HOU)
Javier is close to rejoining the Astros. He’ll head out on a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend and hopefully rejoin the Astros afterward. Hunter Brown will start for the Astros on Sunday and could be replaced in the rotation by Javier when he returns.
Gerrit Cole (SP - NYY)
Cole continues to play catch and slowly ramp up for his return from injury. On Thursday, Cole and the Yankees said they are targeting a mid-June return to the Yankees.
Zack Short (2B - BOS)
Short will be added to the active roster, and Emmanuel Valdez will be optioned back to AAA.
Merrill Kelly (SP - ARI)
With his injury, Kelly will be moved to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for the newly acquired Matt Bowman.
