MLB News & Notes: June 25
Catch up on the major news from Tuesday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Fernando Tatis Jr. (OF - SD)
An hour after publishing the news, more news on Tatis came out. His right femoral injury will keep Tatis sidelined for a while. The Padres hope he’ll be back by the all-star break but there’s a good chance it will be after.
Luke Williams (3B/OF - ATL)
The Braves called up Luke Williams on Tuesday and placed Brian Anderson on the IL with a bacterial infection. Williams was hitting .288 with seven home runs and 15 stolen bases over 39 games at AAA.
Chris Paddack (SP - MIN)
Chris Paddack was placed on the IL with right arm fatigue. There is no clear timetable for Paddack’s return. Ronny Henriquez was recalled and has a 3.52 ERA with 37 strikeouts over 38.1 innings pitched while pitching primarily out of the bullpen in AAA. David Festa looks to be the one to take Paddack’s spot in the rotation and could get called up and make his MLB debut on Thursday.
Nick Lodolo (SP - CIN)
Nick Lodolo was placed on the IL on Tuesday with a left finger blister. The hope is to have Lodolo back before the all-star break. Yosver Zulueta was recalled from AAA, who has struck out 39 over 30.2 innings out of the bullpen.
Justin Verlander (SP - HOU)
Justin Verlander is slowly progressing from his neck injury, and there is still no timetable for his return.
Starling Marte (OF - NYM)
Marte was placed on the IL with a knee bone bruise. He’ll be shut down for two weeks, and the goal is to have Marte back in four weeks. Ben Gamel was recalled from AAA to take Marte’s spot on the roster. Tyrone Taylor started on Tuesday versus an RHP and looks to be the initial benefactor of Marte’s injury.
Dallas Keuchel (SP - MIL)
The Mariners traded Keuchel to the Brewers on Tuesday for cash considerations. Don’t add Keuchel, who has been horrible at AAA.
Bo Bichette (SS - TOR)
Bichette was activated from the IL on Tuesday, and he was back hitting leadoff, where he went 1-4 with a walk. Steward Beroa was sent back to AAA.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand (1B,3B - CIN)
CES had surgery on his hand, and he will be out for the rest of the 2024 season.
Bryan Woo (SP - SEA)
Woo was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury, and he’ll be out for 2-4 weeks. Colin Snider was recalled from AAA to take Woo’s spot on the roster.
Patrick Sandoval (SP - LAA)
Sandoval will have Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
Chase Silseth (SP - LAA)
Silseth was activated from the IL and optioned him to AAA. The Angels need some help starting pitching, so we can see Silseth or Reid Detmers soon. Roansy Contreras will start on Wednesday, but Silseth and Detmers could be up soon.
Miguel Sano (1B - LAA)
After a while on the IL with plenty of setbacks, he was activated from the IL on Tuesday. Michael Stefanic was sent back to AAA.
Josh Jung (3B - TEX)
The hope was Jung would take batting practice on Tuesday and return to the Rangers. Instead, he’ll return to Texas to undergo more testing as he’s dealing with tendon inflammation in his surgically repaired wrist. We’ll have to wait for more information about the next steps for Jung potentially returning to the team.
Gary Sanchez (C - MIL)
Sanchez was scratched from Tuesday’s game with left calf tightness. He’s considered day-to-day.
Hayden Birdsong (SP - SF)
Birdsong will get called up to make his MLB debut on Wednesday. He has made two starts at AAA and 13 starts between AA and AAA, where he has a 2.51 ERA with 75 strikeouts over 57.1 innings pitched. I’d wait to see how he throws on Wednesday before getting excited for any fantasy upside.
Zac Gallen (SP - ARI)
Gallen will throw a bullpen on Thursday, hoping he can return to the DBacks shortly after.
Gavin Williams (SP - CLE)
Williams will make a rehab start on Wednesday and should return to the Guardians for his next start if all goes well.
Josiah Gray (SP - WAS)
Gray threw six strong innings in his rehab start on Tuesday and he’s expected to rejoin the Nats early next week.
Gleyber Torres (2B - NYY)
Torres had trouble running out a ball in the 8th inning of tonight’s game. He is dealing with some groin tightness, which we will monitor in the coming days.
Gerrit Cole (SP - NYY)
Cole’s velocity was down to 92 mph after the first innings. He allowed four home runs while walking four and did not record a strikeout. Cole said he was simply holding back his velocity, but I still do not feel great seeing that velocity dip.
Edward Cabrera (SP - MIA)
Cabrera threw four no-hit innings with seven strikeouts in a rehab start on Tuesday. He’ll likely need at least one more rehab start before rejoining the Marlins.
