MLB News & Notes: June 2
Catch up on Sunday's news from the diamond with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Oscar Colas (OF - CWS)
Colas was recalled from AAA as Andrew Benintendi was placed on the IL with left Achilles tendinitis. Colas hit .244 with five home runs and six stolen bases at AAA over 45 games. Colas is worth watching for now but may become a fantasy target in the coming weeks.
Michael Wacha (SP - KC)
Wacha was placed on the IL with a left foot fracture. It occurred in the first inning in Friday’s start, but Wacha stayed in the game for another five innings. The Royals hope he’ll be back in 3-4 weeks, but time will tell. Daniel Lynch was recalled to take Wacha’s spot in the rotation. Lynch had a 4.76 ERA over nine starts at AAA and has allowed two earned runs over 12 innings with eight strikeouts in three appearances with the Royals.
Vaughn Grissom (2B,SS - BOS)
Grissom was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain. He was hitting .148 with a double over 23 games with the Red Sox. Bobby Dalbec was recalled to join the Red Sox. Dalbec hit .245 with eight home runs at AAA over 26 games but only hit .132 with two doubles over 22 games with the Red Sox.
Carlos Carrasco (SP - CLE)
Carrasco was activated from the IL on Sunday and made the start, lasting four innings while allowing five runs. Eli Morgan was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation to make room for Carrasco on the roster.
Luis Medina (SP - OAK)
Medina was activated from the IL on Sunday and threw 5.2 innings pitched against the Braves while allowing zero earned runs while striking out six. Aaron Brooks was DFA’d to make room for Medina. I have always been a sucker for Medina hs the skills are strong, but the execution has been inconsistent. Medina will be an FAAB target in the coming weeks.
Daniel Schneeman (3B - CLE)
Schneeman was recalled from AAA as Johnathan Rodriguez was sent back to AAA. Schneeman hit .294 with ten home runs and four stolen bases over 53 games at AAA. Scheeman went 1-3 with a double and two RBI on Sunday as he filled in for the injured Andres Gimenez, but Gimenez should not be out much longer.
Justin Wilson (RP - CIN)
Wilson was activated from the IL, and Alex Young returned to AAA. Wilson will add depth to the Reds bullpen.
Sixto Sanchez (SP - MIA)
Sixto was placed on the IL with shoulder inflammation. He has not been able to figure it out this season, and this injury may end another rough season for him. Emmanuel Ramirez was recalled to take Sixto’s spot and will add bullpen depth. Roddery Munoz may be up after this week when the Marlins need another starting pitcher, as they only play five games this week.
Quinn Priester (SP - PIT)
Priester was recalled on Sunday to make the spot start. He did not fare well, allowing four earned runs over 4.2 innings. Alika Williams was sent back to AAA.
Drew Smith (RP - NYM)
Smith was activated from the IL to rejoin the Mets bullpen. Josh Walker was sent back to AAA.
Riley Adams (C - WAS)
Adams was sent to AAA on Sunday. He will reportedly get some time at 1B to make him more versatile when he returns to the Nats. Drew Millas was recalled to be the backup catcher. Millas was hitting .308 with five home runs and five steals over 30 AAA games.
CJ Abrams (SS - WAS)
Abrams was scratched from Sunday’s start as he’s still battling an illness. He’s day-to-day, but he’s expected back any day.
Royce Lews (3B - MIN)
Lewis is expected to rejoin the Twins on Tuesday after ending his rehab stint. Edouard Julien appears to be the odd man out, as he’ll be sent to AAA. This makes sense with Julien’s struggles and Jose Miranda playing well during his time with the Twins.
David Bote (3B - CHC)
Bote was recalled from AAA on Sunday as Nick Madrigal was sent to AAA, and Adbert Alzolay was moved to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man for Bote. Bote was hitting .279 with five home runs over 28 games at AAA. Bote has had some streaming appeal in the past.
Ben Joyce (RP - LAA)
Joyce was recalled to join the Angels after Reid Detmers was sent to AAA. Joyce is a flamethrowing reliever who had a 4.26 ERA over 19 minor league innings with 34 strikeouts.
Nolan Schanuel (1B - LAA)
Schanuel was out of Sunday’s lineup as he continues to nurse a thumb injury. Schanuel missed the weekend series, but he remains day-to-day.
Gerrit Cole (SP - NYY)
Cole is set to start his first rehab session on Tuesday in AA. Cole is expected to make 2-3 rehab starts and could see a return to the Yankees in the middle of June.
Max Muncy (3B - LAD)
Muncy said he felt a twinge in his rib cage while rehabbing and has been shut down from all baseball activities. There is no timetable for Muncy’s return. Muncy could be on the cut list, depending on your league format.
Jorge Mateo (2B,SS - BAL)
Mateo left Sunday’s game with a head injury as he was hit by Cedric Mullins, who was making a swing on the on-deck circle. Mateo is in the concussion protocol.
Luis Arraez (1B,2B - SD)
Arraez left Sunday after jamming his shoulder and neck, sliding head-first into second base. After the game, the Padres said Arraez should be fine, and the removal was more precautionary.
Ranger Suarez (SP - PHI)
After leaving Saturday’s game due to a hand injury from a comebacker, Suarez said he’s doing much better on Sunday. The Phillies will reevaluate Suarez in a few days to see if he can make his next start.
Kyle Isbel (OF - KC)
Isbel left Sunday’s game with a head/neck injury from Bobby Witt’s knee when they were both going after a popup. The Royals say Isbel does not have a concussion or need testing and that he’s day-to-day.
Blake Snell (SP - SF)
Snell left his Sunday start after aggravating his adductor/groin injury. Snell will undergo more testing, but an IL stint is likely. We could see Keaton Winn return this week or maybe another round of Mason Black, who pitched on Sunday.
Dominic Fletcher (OF - CWS)
After colliding with the wall, Fletcher was removed from Sunday’s game as he went up to rob a home run from William Contreras. The White Sox said Fletcher would have trouble throwing the ball afterwards and’ll be further evaluated on Monday.
Kody Clemens (2B - PHI)
Clemens was scratched from Sunday’s game with back spasms. Whit Merrifield took his spot, and Clemens is day-to-day.
Justyn-Henry Malloy (3B,OF - DET)
Malloy will be called up to make his MLB debut on Monday. At AAA, Malloy was hitting .255 with six home runs and three steals. Spencer Torkelson will be sent to AAA. He struggled this year with four home runs and a .201 batting average.
Chadwick Tromp (C - ATL)
Tromp will be sent back to AAA, but no corresponding move has been announced yet from the Braves.
Henry Davis (C,OF - PIT)
Davis is being recalled to rejoin the Pirates on Monday. No corresponding move has been announced, but Quinn Priester's return to AAA would make sense. After struggling with the Pirates, Davis hit .286 with seven doubles and seven home runs over 22 games at AAA.
Brandon Marsh (OF - PHI)
Marsh left Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. He’ll be further evaluated on Monday.
