MLB News & Notes: July 3
Catch up on the news from Wednesday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Aaron Civale (SP - MIL)
We are getting closer to the trade deadline, and we got a good one today. Aaron Civale was traded to the Brewers, and INF Gregory Barrios was sent to the Rays. Taylor Clarke was DFA’d to make room for Civale.
Over 17 starts with the Rays, Civale had a 5.09 ERA and 4.06 SIERA with a 15.1% K-BB. It’s been an up-and-down season for Civale who will look to help a Brewers team that is desperate for starting pitching.
In Barrios, the Rays receive a 20-year-old SS who spent his season at High-A. Barrios has played 61 games, hitting .325 with 17 doubles, two triples, a home run, and 18 stolen bases. It will be some time before Barrios potentially joins the Rays, but it is an intriguing long-term investment for a team that is great at building their minor league system.
Shane Baz (SP - TB)
With Civale leaving the rotation, Baz will get the call to join the Rays rotation. Baz made ten starts at AAA and had a 4.12 ERA with 44 strikeouts over 39.1 innings pitched. Baz was dominant over his last five starts, allowing four earned runs over 23 innings pitched with 35 strikeouts. Baz should be added in all formats.
Royce Lewis (3B - MIN)
Lewis was placed on the IL on Wednesday with a right adductor strain. He will be shut down through the all-star break and be evaluated after the break. Brooks Lee was called up from AAA to take Lewis’s spot on the roster. Lee was hitting .350 with seven home runs and two steals at AAA.
Kerry Carpenter (OF - DET)
Carpenter was rehabbing his way back from a back injury but has been shut down as he’s dealing with more discomfort in his back.
Christian Scott (SP - NYM)
Scott was officially recalled from AAA to make the start on Wednesday. Matt Festa was DFA’d.
Dean Kremer (SP - BAL)
Kremer was activated from the IL on Wednesday to make the start for the Orioles in Seattle. Nick Vespi was sent back to AAA.
Blake Dunn (OF - CIN)
Dunn was recalled by the Reds, while Levi Jordan returned to AAA. Since returning to AAA on June 14, Dunn hit .244 with one home run and two stolen bases. Dunn will likely be outfield depth with no fantasy relevance.
Anthony Maldonado (RP - MIA)
Maldonado was recalled to add bullpen depth to the Marlins, while Valente Bellozo returned to AAA. Bellozo struggled in his last start and will need more seasoning in the minors.
Jordan Romano (RP - TOR)
Romano had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, and he’ll be shut down for six weeks before he can begin throwing. Chad Green will continue to serve as the Jays closer until Yimi Garcia returns. Add Garcia where you can now, as he could be the closer for the remainder of the season.
Peter Lambert (RP - COL)
Lambert was recalled from AAA to add bullpen depth for the Rockies, while Riley Pint returned to AAA.
Riley Adams (C - WAS)
Adams was recalled from AAA, while Drew Millas returned to AAA. Once again, Adams will serve as backup to Keibert Ruiz.
Joey Ortiz (3B - MIL)
Ortiz was placed on the IL with neck inflammation, which has been bothering him for a while. Vinny Capra was recalled from AAA, where he was hitting .246 with four home runs and five stolen bases.
Enoli Parades (RP - MIL)
Paredes was placed on the IL with right forearm tendinitis, and Janson Junk was recalled from AAA.
Cristian Mena (SP - ARI)
Mena was called up from AAA to make his MLB debut for the DBacks. Gavin Hollowell was sent back to AAA. The 21-year-old Mena made 16 starts at AAA where he had a 4.90 ERA and 89 strikeouts over 82.2 IP. Mena allowed four runs over three innings with two strikeouts in his debut.
Justin Turner (3B - TOR)
On Wednesday, Turner was placed on the paternity list, and Steward Berroa was recalled.
Jared Jones (SP - PIT)
Jones was removed from Wednesday’s start after five innings with a right lat strain. After the game, Jones was not too concerned but the Pirates will likely be very careful with their young starter.
Jared Shuster (SP - CWS)
Shuster will get the start on Thursday against the Guardians, as Drew Thorpe is being pushed back to Friday.
Blake Snell (SP - SF)
Snell threw five scoreless innings with nine strikeouts in his final rehab start at AAA. Snell should rejoin the Giants rotation next week.
Luis Rengifo (2B,SS,3B,OF - LAA)
Rengifo was removed from Wednesday’s game in the 9th innings with a hand injury. He injured the hand on a swing in the 9th and we will await more news on Thursday. A hand injury on a swing is usually a hamate bone injury, but we will wait and see.
