MLB News & Notes: August 9
Catch up on the news from Friday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Camilo Doval (RP - SF)
In a surprising move, the Giants sent their all-star closer to AAA on Friday. Doval has struggled off and on this season, and over his last eight outings, he has allowed seven earned runs over 7.1 innings with eight strikeouts and six walks. He does have a win and five saves in the eight outings. Hopefully this is just a short trip to work on things, but we shall see. Jordan Hicks could be the man that benefits from Doval’s absence, but Ryan Walker and the Rogers brothers could be involved in the 9th as well. There are reports that Doval was also a bother with the powers-to-be, so there’s that, too. If you need roster flexibility, Doval is a dropLanden Roupp was recalled from AAA. Update: After Friday night's game, Bob Melvin said Ryan Walker would get the first crack at closing duties.
Joe Ryan (SP - MIN)
Ryan was placed on the IL on Friday with a Grade 2 teres major (lat) strain. He will likely miss at least a month, and he is a drop for me this weekend. Scott Blewett was recalled from AAA. Louie Varland should stick around in the Twins rotation for the time being.
Brooks Lee (SS,3B - MIN)
Lee was placed on the IL on Friday with biceps tendinitis. Lee has been struggling of late and has been a drop for me in most formats. Kyle Farmer was activated from the IL to take Lee’s spot on the roster.
Will Brennan (OF - CLE)
Brennan was activated from the IL on Friday and should return to his platoon role in the outfield. Angel Martinez was sent back to AAA.
Carlos Carrasco (SP - CLE)
Carrasco was placed on the IL with a left hip strain. Peter Strzelecki was recalled from AAA.
Jhony Brito (SP - SD)
Brito was recalled from AAA on Friday. Brito has made five starts at AAA, throwing 11 innings (only throwing more than 2.2 innings once) while allowing 11 earned runs with nine strikeouts. Randy Vasquez returned to AAA.
Taylor Ward (OF - LAA)
Ward was activated from the paternity list on Friday. Charles Leblanc returned to AAA.
Brayan Bello (SP - BOS)
Bello was placed on the paternity list on Friday. Bello should be back on Monday for his 2-step. Cam Booser was recalled from AAA.
Triston Casas (1B - BOS)
The Red Sox are saying Casas could return any day. That it’s up to him when he’s ready. He’s hitting .286 over seven rehab starts with five doubles and four RBI.
Austin Hays (OF - PHI)
Hays was placed on the IL Friday with a left hamstring strain. The extent of the injury has not been revealed yet. Cal Stevenson will be recalled from AAA. Stevenson was hitting .307 over 90 games at AAA with seven home runs and 27 stolen bases.
Tanner Bibee (SP - CLE)
Bibbe has been cleared to rejoin the Guardians’ rotation, and he’ll make the start on Sunday versus the Twins.
Alex Cobb (SP - CLE)
Cobb was officially activated from the IL on Friday and made the start in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Anthony Gose was DFA’d.
Mookie Betts (2B,SS,OF - LAD)
After the Dodgers originally said Betts would return at SS next week, they now say he’ll return to RF. Miguel Rojas and Amed Rosario will continue to take care of the starts at SS.
Max Muncy (1B,3B - LAD)/Tommy Edman (2B,OF - LAD)
Muncy will start a rehab assignment on Friday, while Edman will start his rehab assignment on Saturday.
Walker Buehler (SP - LAD)
After a successful rehab start on Thursday, Buehler is expected to rejoin the Dodgers on Thursday against the Brewers.
Matt Vierling (3B,OF - DET)
Vierling was scratched from Friday’s lineup as he still has back spasms.
CJ Abrams (SS - WAS)
Abrams was out of Friday’s lineup for the Nats as he’s dealing with back spasms. He’s considered day-to-day.
Wenceel Perez (OF - DET)
Perez was removed from Friday’s game in the 4th inning with abdominal tightness. He appeared to suffer the injury in his previous at-bat. Perez will undergo more testing, but this sounds like an oblique injury, usually resulting in an IL stint.
Jake Fraley (OF - CIN)
Fraley left Friday’s game in the 5th innings with a left ankle sprain. The Reds aren’t too concerned, and they expect Fraley back on Saturday. We shall see, as the Reds misdiagnosed players earlier this year. Let’s hope Fraley is okay, as he gets a full week in Great American Small Park next week versus all RHP.
