MLB News & Notes: August 8
Get caught up on the news from Thursday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Pedro Grifol (Manager - N/A)
The White Sox fired manager Pedro Grifol on Thursday. Grady Sizemore will be the interim manager. To be fair to Grifol, who could win with that roster?

Vaughn Grissom (2B - BOS)
Grissom was reinstated from the IL on Thursday, and was sent to AAA.
Spencer Schwellenbach (SP - ATL)
Schwellenbach's next start has been pushed back a couple of days. This can be annoying for fantasy managers, but it is also a good thing,, as the Braves are managing Schwellenbach’s innings in an attempt to have him pitch the rest of the season.
Justin Verlander (SP - HOU)
Verlander will make a rehab start on Saturday at Single-A. He will make a couple more rehab starts and hopes to return later in August.
Josh Lowe (OF - TB)
Lowe left Thursday’s game after fouling a ball off his knee in his first at-bat. X-rays were negative, and Lowe is day-to-day with a knee contusion.
Gabriel Moreno (C - ARI)
On Thursday the DBacks said Moreno will be out for weeks with his groin strain. We still do not know the Grade of the strain, but it isn’t a minor groin injury. Adrian Del Castillo was recalled and went 1-4 in his debut on Wednesday with a double and an RBI. He’s only started one of three games so far.
Merrill Kelly (SP - ARI)
Kelly will throw a bullpen on Friday, and if all goes well he could rejoin the DBacks’ rotation on Sunday without a rehab assignment.
Eduard Bazardo (RP - SEA)
Bazardo was recalled from AAA as the Mariners needed bullpen depth. Jonathan Hernandez was DFA’d.
Dominic Canzone (OF - SEA)
Canzone was activated from the IL on Thursday. Jason Vossler returned to AAA. The outfield is crowded, with Randy Arozarena and Victor Robles locked into their outfield roles. Canzone will likely platoon with Mitch Haniger.

Jones threw 47 pitches over 2 ⅔ innings in his first rehab start on Thursday. Jones will need two or three more rehab starts before rejoining the Pirates at the end of August.
Javier Baez (SS - DET)
Baez was scratched from Thursday’s lineup with neck soreness. He’s day-to-day.
Walker Buehler (SP - LAD)
Buehler allowed one run over 5 ⅓ innings in his Thursday rehab start. Buehler looks good to go and should rejoin the Dodgers early next week. So long, River Ryan.
Austin Hays (OF - PHI)
Hays left Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury. He was out of Thursday’s game as he was undergoing more testing. We should get more information on Hays on Friday.
Anthony Volpe (SS - NYY)

Ranger Suarez (SP - PHI)
Suarez threw a 36-pitch bullpen on Thursday. He’s scheduled to throw live batting practice next before the Phillies decide on a rehab assignment or not for Suarez. He’s been out with a back injury since late July.
Julio Rodriguez (OF - SEA)
JRod ran the bases for the second straight game. He could be back soon as the team’s DH. The Mariners are saying he’s day-to-day.
