MLB News & Notes: August 7
Catch up on the news and notes from Wednesday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Dylan Dodd (RP - ATL)
Dodd was recalled from AAA to add bullpen depth to the Braves. Bryce Elder returned to AAA after his start on Tuesday.
DL Hall (SP - MIL)
Hall pitched four innings and allowed a run in his rehab start on Tuesday. He threw 64 pitches after throwing 77 in his previous start. Hall does not have much more to prove in rehab. He should be back with the Brewers any day.
Adbert Alzolay (RP - CHC)
Alzolay has been out with a forearm injury. On Wednesday, the Cubs announced he would undergo Tommy John Surgery. He’s expected back in 2026.
Seth Brown (1B,OF - OAK)
Brown was placed on the paternity list on Wednesday. Armando Alvarez was recalled from AAA to take Brown’s spot on the roster for a few games.
Mason Miller (RP - OAK)
As expected, Miller was activated from the IL on Wednesday and immediately picked up a save for the A’s. Gerardo Reyes was DFA’d.
Drew Rasmussen (RP - TB)
Rasmussen was activated from the IL on Wednesday. He’s expected to work out of the Rays’ bullpen for the rest of 2024. Joel Kuhnel was sent back to AAA.
Kyle Tucker (OF - HOU)
Tucker is now jogging on his injured shin but still can’t sprint. He’s weeks away, and at this point, I am not sure how much we will see of Tucker in September.
Marcus Stroman (SP - NYY)
Stroman had his next start pushed back to Sunday so he could work on his mechanics. He admitted he is all out of whack on the mound right now.
Louie Varland (SP - MIN)
Varland will be called up to start one of the games for the Twins in their doubleheader on Friday.
Joe Ryan (SP - MIN)
Ryan left Wednesday’s start after throwing three pitches in the third inning. After the game, it was determined that Ryan left with tightness in his right triceps. He will likely head to the IL, and Louie Varland should be a candidate to take Ryan’s spot in the rotation.
Will Benson (OF - CIN)
Benson was activated from the paternity list on Wednesday. Joey Wiemer returned to AAA.
Heston Kjerstad (OF - BAL)
Kjerstad was originally sent to AAA a few days ago, but that will be canceled as he’ll be placed on the IL with a concussion.
Grayson Rodriguez (SP - BAL)
Rodriguez was placed on the IL with a lat injury. The Orioles say it is not as bad as last year, which made GRod miss three months. They hope to get him back by the end of the year, but there is no timetable for his return just yet. Keegan Akin was recalled from AAA.
Nick Fortes (C - MIA)
Fortes was placed on the IL with a right quadriceps strain. Jhonny Pereda was recalled from AAA, and Ali Sanchez should be the Marlins' primary catcher while Fortes is out. Sanchez is not fantasy-relevant right now.
Jacob Webb (RP - BAL)
Webb was placed on the IL with right forearm inflammation. Bryan Baker was recalled from AAA.
Bobby Miller (SP - LAD)
Miller was scratched from his last rehab start last Friday because of soreness in his right triceps. He’s scheduled to make his next rehab start this Friday.
Walker Buehler (SP - LAD)
Buehler will make his next rehab start on Thursday. If all goes well, Buehler is expected to rejoin the Dodgers next week, which could spell the end for River Ryan.
Dylan Cease (SP - SD)
Cease is expected to start this Sunday after having his start cut short on Tuesday due to rain.
Miguel Rojas (SS - LAD)
After one rehab appearance on Tuesday, Rojas was activated from the IL on Wednesday. James Outman returned to AAA. On Tuesday, the Dodgers said Mookie Betts will be the everyday SS when he returns, so do not get too invested in Rojas.
Tyler O’Neill (OF - BOS)
TON was placed on the IL with an infection in his lower left calf. He had already missed games with an illness, and now the infection has sidelined him once again.
Brusdar Graterol (RP - LAD)
Graterol was placed on the IL with a severe right hamstring injury that will likely end his season. Michael Grove was activated from the IL to take Graterol’s spot on the roster.
Nick Pivetta (SP - BOS)
Pivetta is battling some arm fatigue, so the Red Sox will skip Pivetta’s next start.
Ryan Bliss (INF - SEA)
Bliss was recalled from AAA, while Cade Marlowe was sent back to AAA. There’s no fantasy appeal to this transaction.
Jurickson Profar (OF - SD)
Profar left Wednesday’s game after a pitch hit him in the knee. He has already been battling a knee injury, which does not help. After the game, Profar underwent testing, and he’s currently day-to-day.
Austin Hays (OF - PHI)
Hays left Wednesday’s game versus the Dodgers with tightness in his left hamstring. He’ll undergo more testing, but for now, he’s day-to-day.
Taijuan Walker (SP - PHI)
Walker looked good in his second rehab start on Wednesday. There’s a good chance that Walker will rejoin the Phillies’ rotation next week, meaning the end of Tyler Phillips.
