MLB News & Notes: August 5
Catch up on the news from Monday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Reynaldo Lopez (SP - ATL)
After hoping Lopez would avoid the IL, that came to an end as the Braves placed him on the IL with right forearm inflammation. He had an MRI last week that revealed no structural damage, so hopefully, this is a short IL stint for Lopez. Bryce Elder was recalled to take Lopez’s spot on the roster, and he’s scheduled to start on Tuesday.
Nick Gordon (OF - MIA)
After the Marlins added Kyle Stowers and Christian Pache at the trade deadline, there was not much room on the roster for Gordon, so the Marlins DFA’d Gordon on Monday.
Jesus Luzardo (SP - MIA)
On Monday, the Marlins said Luzardo is recovering slowly from his injury, and he will not throw for six more weeks. If you have not dropped Luzardo yet, you can now.
Logan Allen (SP - CLE)
The Guardians recalled Allen from AAA on Monday to make the start for the Guardians. He threw five innings while allowing two runs and striking out two. Connor Gillispie was sent back to AAA.
Dominic Leone (RP - CWS)
Leone was activated from the IL on Monday, while Sammy Peralta was returned to AAA.
Ky Bush (SP - CWS)
The 24-year-old Bush was called up on Monday to make his MLB debut against the A’s. Bush pitched four innings, allowing three runs, walking five, and striking out three. Prelander Berroa was sent back to AAA.
Wilmer Flores (1B,3B - SF)
Flores will have a Tenex Procedure on his injured knee to break up some scar tissue. The goal is to have Flores back playing in September, but that’s assuming all goes well.
Cody Bellinger (1B,OF - CHC)
The Cubs said Bellinger still has trouble throwing the ball due to his injured finger. This means Bellinger will just DH for the foreseeable future.
Tyler O’Neill (OF - BOS)
TON was out of Monday’s lineup for his third straight game, battling an illness. He was available off the bench, making it seem like TON will return any day.
Mason Miller (RP - OAK)
Miller threw live batting practice on Monday without his cast. He’s been throwing this whole time, and there’s a chance He'll be back when he's first eligible on August 7th.
Gabriel Moreno (C - ARI)
Moreno left Monday’s game with an apparent groin injury. He was in a lot of pain when he left. He has a strained left groin and will undergo more testing. It surely looks like Moreno will head to the IL.
Brooke Lee (2B,3B - MIN)
Lee was out of Monday’s lineup for a second straight game. He’s battling shoulder soreness. He’s still considered day-to-day. I’ve dropped Lee recently as his overall production has been lacking.
Freddie Freeman (1B - LAD)
After the great news we saw on Sunday regarding Freeman’s son, Maximus, Freeman returned from the bereavement list on Monday. The corresponding move was a bit of a surprise as Cavan Biggio was DFA’d.
Ranger Suarez (SP - PHI)
Suarez threw a bullpen on Monday, his first big step since hitting the IL with a sore back. He will likely throw another bullpen and possibly make a rehab start before returning.
Blake Treinen (RP - LAD)
Treinen has received some save opportunities of late, but that will be put on hold as he was placed on the IL with left hip discomfort. Brusdar Graterol was activated from the IL. Graterol has closing experience in the past, but we should expect Graterol to return to a 7th or 8th-inning role.
