MLB News & Notes: August 25
Catch up on the news from Sunday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Willson Contreras (C - STL)
Contreras was placed on the IL with a fractured finger. Early reports say Contreras will be out for some time, making him a drop in most formats. Ivan Herrera was recalled and he should split some playing time with Pedro Pages at catcher for the Cardinals.
Shohei Ohtani (UT - LAD)
Ohtani was hit in the arm by a pitch in the 8th innings. He stayed in the game, and after the game, his X-rays came back negative. He’s expected to be back on the lineup to start the week.
Robbie Ray (SP - SF)
Ray left Sunday’s game with left hamstring tightness. He’ll undergo further testing on Monday.
Michael Harris II (OF - ATL)
Harris left Sunday’s game with left-hand soreness after getting hit by a pitch in the first inning. X-rays came back negative, and Harris is considered day-to-day.
Marcell Ozuna (UT - ATL)
Ozuna fouled a ball off his shin on Sunday. He was in serious pain but finished the game. He’s expected back in the lineup on Monday, but the situation is worth monitoring.
Joey Bart (C - PIT)
After hobbling to first base, Bart left Sunday’s game as he tried to run out a ground ball. The team says it is left hamstring discomfort. After the game, the Pirates said Bart would head to the IL.
Hunter Renfroe (OF - KC)
Renfroe was placed on the IL with a right hamstring strain. Tyler Gentry was recalled from AAA. Gentry was hitting .256 at AAA with 13 home runs and five stolen bases. Gentry will likely split time with Dairon Blanco in RF.
Paul Blackburn (SP - NYM)
Blackburn was placed on the IL with a right-hand contusion. Huascar Brazoban was recalled to add bullpen depth until the Mets decide what to do with Blackburn’s spot in the rotation.
Dylan Crews (OF - WAS)
Crews is set to make his MLB debut to start the week. At AAA, he hit .270 with 13 home runs and 25 stolen bases. Riley Adams was sent back to AAA.
Griffin Conine (OF - MIA)
Conine is expected to be promoted on Monday to make his MLB debut with the Marlins. The son of Marlins great Jeff Conine was hitting .268 at AAA with 19 home runs. He’s expected to get plenty of at-bats for the Marlins but not play daily.
Kolby Allard (SP - PHI)
Allard was recalled from AAA on Sunday to make the Phillies' spot start. He was called up to give the starting rotation an extra day of rest, and he did a great job doing that. Allard allowed two runs over five innings with five strikeouts while picking up the win. Max Lazar returned to AAA.
Jacob Lopez (SP - TB)
Lopez was recalled to make a spot start for the Rays versus the Dodgers on Sunday. Lopez was fantastic, throwing five innings and allowing one run with six strikeouts. Over his last five starts at AAA, Lopez had a 3.20 ERA with 29 strikeouts over 25.1 innings pitched. Joel Kuehnel was sent back to AAA. Lopez should head back to AAA on Monday, with Erasmo Ramirez getting recalled.
Nolan Schanuel (1B - LAA)
Schanuel was out of Sunday’s lineup due to back stiffness. He missed the weekend’s game with the stiffness, and he’s day-to-day. The Angels expect him back to start the week.
Jonathan Bermudez (RP - MIA)
Bermudez was recalled from AAA to add bullpen help for the Marlins. Emmanuel Ramirez was sent back to AAA.
Xavier Edwards (SS - MIA)
Edwards was out of the Marlins lineup because of back discomfort. He will miss another game or two, and the Marlins hope to have him back later this week.
Phil Bickford (RP - NYY)
Bickford was recalled from AAA to add bullpen depth. Michael Tonkin was DFA’d.
Alex Faedo (RP - DET)
Faedo returned from the paternity list and was placed on the IL with a right shoulder strain. Ty Madden will be called up on Monday to make his MLB debut versus the White Sox. Madden has made 22 starts between AA and AAA this season and has a 6.98 ERA with 124 strikeouts over 96.2 innings pitched.
Brady Feigl (RP - PIT)
Feigl was called up on Sunday, while Hunter Stratton was placed on the IL with a ruptured left patella tendon. Feigl will eventually make his MLB debut as a 33-year-old.
Luke Bachar (RP - SD)
Bachar was recalled from AAA to add bullpen depth for the Padres. Logan Gillaspie was sent back to AAA.
Max Kepler (OF - MIN)
Kepler was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with knee soreness. He’s day-to-day.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (SP - LAD)
Yamamoto will make his first rehab start on Wednesday. He’ll need at least three rehab starts before rejoining the Dodgers.
Jacob deGrom (SP - TEX)
deGrom is set to make his second rehab start on Tuesday. The Rangers said deGrom will need four rehab starts before rejoining the team.
Yu Darvish (SP - SD)
Darvish threw a three-inning simulated game on Sunday. He threw 54 pitches as he works his way back from leave and a groin injury. The goal is to get Darvish back sometime in September.
Luke Raley (1B,OF - SEA)
Raley was scratched from Sunday’s lineup versus the Giants with flu-like symptoms. He’s day-to-day.
Cedric Mullins (OF - BAL)
Mullins missed his second straight game battling a quad injury. He’s considered day-to-day.
Ryan Mountcastle (1B - BAL)
Mountcastle was out of Sunday’s lineup as he battles a wrist injury. He suffered the injury on Thursday and missed the whole weekend. The Orioles are saying he’s still day-to-day.
Yordan Alvarez (OF - HOU)
Alvarez was again out of the Astros lineup on Sunday as he’s battling a neck injury. He’s feeling better and expected to start the week in the lineup.
