MLB News & Notes: August 22
Catch up on the news from Thursday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3B,OF - NYY)
Jazz is set to be activated from the IL on Friday. He spent the minimum amount of time on the IL with a UCL sprain. Oswald Peraza was sent back to AAA after Thursday’s game.
Hector Neris (RP - HOU)
After being released by the Cubs so they wouldn’t have to pay Neris his bonus, he signed with the Astros. Neris will add a nice backend of the bullpen arm to support Josh Hader. He’ll fill in for the banged-up Ryan Pressly.
Blake Perkins (OF - MIL)
Perkins was activated from the IL on Thursday. He’ll return to a platoon role in the outfield for the Brewers. Tyler Black returned to AAA.
Alex Faedo (SP,RP - DET)
Faedo was placed on the paternity list on Thursday. Sean Guenther was recalled from AAA to fill in for Faedo while he’s out.
Trevor Rogers (SP - BAL)
Many questioned the Orioles' trading two prospects for Rogers, and after a few starts with the Orioles, Rogers has been sent to AAA. With Rogers out of the rotation, Cade Povich has a better chance of sticking in. Matt Bowman was recalled to add depth to the bullpen.
Nick Vespi (RP - BAL)
The Orioles called up Vespi for some bullpen depth. Colin Selby was sent back to AAA.
Emmanuel Rivera (3B - BAL)
After the Orioles picked Rivera up from Waivers on Wednesday, he was activated and joined the team on Thursday. Livan Soto was sent to AAA. Bruce Zimmermann was DFA’d.
Dominic Smith (1B - CIN)
Smith was released by the Red Sox earlier this week. On Thursday, the Reds added him to the team. He should platoon with Ty France at first base and Jeimer Candelario on the IL.
Chris Taylor (SS,OF - LAD)
Taylor was activated from the IL on Thursday. Jason Heyward was DFA’d. Kevin Kiermaier should be locked into regular at-bats versus RHP with Heyward out of the way.
Jake Fraley (OF - CIN)
Fraley lands on the IL with a right knee sprain. Amed Rosario and Will Benson likely split time in the OF, taking Fraley’s spot.
Joey Cantillo (SP – CLE)
After another unsuccessful spot start, Cantillo was sent back to AAA. Connor Gillispie was recalled to add bullpen depth.
Max Scherzer (SP - TEX)
Scherzer's rehab start was scratched because the Rangers wanted to give him more time to heal his shoulder. No new rehab date has been set. He was set to return to the Rangers after this rehab start.
Matt Waldron (SP - SD)
After another rough start on Thursday, Waldron was sent back to AAA. Logan Gillaspie was recalled from AAA to add bullpen help.
Mickey Moniak (OF - LAA)
Moniak left Thursday’s game with an elbow injury after a pitch hit him. X-rays came back negative, and he’s day-to-day.
Ryan Mountcastle (1B - BAL)
Mountcastle was removed from Thursday’s game with wrist soreness. He’s considered day-to-day.
Andrew Abbott (SP - CIN)
Abbott was expected to start on Friday, but he was scratched. Buck Farmer will make the start, but Abbott may be the bulk arm. Nothing has been made official for Abbott.
Jack Leiter (SP - TEX)
Leiter has been a strikeout machine of late in AAA, striking out 20 over his last two starts. He’s expected to get called up and make a start next week for the Rangers.
