Joey Votto
Votto officially retired from baseball on Wednesday. He was a great player on the field and appeared to be a better human being off the field. His speech in Cooperstown will be legendary.
Justin Verlander (SP - HOU)
Verlander was activated from the IL on Wednesday and made the start versus the Red Sox. Verlander threw five innings, 76 pitches, and allowed two runs while striking out six. Seth Martinez was sent back to AAA. Martinez was quickly recalled as Kaleb Ort was placed on the paternity list.
Luis Gil (SP - NYY)
Gil was placed on the IL with a back injury. The Yankees do not think it’s too serious and that Gil will return after 15 days. Will Warren was called up from AAA to take Gil’s spot in the rotation.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (3B,OF - NYY)
Jazz took live batting practice on Wednesday, and he continues to progress in an attempt to return when he’s first eligible from the IL.
Camilo Doval (RP - SF)
Doval is eligible to return to the Giants, and Bob Melvin says Doval should rejoin the team for their upcoming road trip, which will start on Friday. Melvin didn’t say if Doval would reclaim his closing role, as Ryan Walker has done well in Doval’s absence.
Victor Vodnik (RP - COL)
Vodnik was placed on the IL with right biceps inflammation. There is no timetable for his return just yet. Jeff Criswell was recalled from AAA, and Tyler Kinley will likely step into closing duties for the Rockies.
Cole Irvin (SP - BAL)
As expected, Irvin was recalled on Wednesday to make the start for the Orioles. He lasted 4.1 innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts. Dillon Tate was sent back to AAA.
Emmanuel Rivera (3B - BAL)
The Orioles claimed Rivera off waivers on Wednesday. Terrin Viera was DFA’d.
Clarke Schmidt (SP - NYY)
Schmidt has been out since May with a lat strain and will make his first rehab start on Friday. He’ll need a couple of rehab starts before rejoining the Yankees.
Anthony Rizzo (1B - NYY)
Rizzo is set to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. He’s been out for more than two months with a forearm injury.
Jon Berti (3B - NYY)
Berti is expected to start a rehab assignment on Friday and possibly rejoin the Yankees early next week.
Nolan Gorman (2B - STL)
Gorman was sent to AAA on Wednesday. He’s been struggling a lot lately, so some time in the minors may benefit him. Jose Fermin was recalled from AAA.
Joey Cantillo (SP - CLE)
As expected, Cantillo was recalled from AAA to start instead of Alex Cobb. He got shelled yet again. Anthony Gose was DFA’d.
Mason McCoy (3B - SD)
McCoy was recalled from AAA on Wednesday, while Matthew Batten returned to AAA.
Johnny Cueto (SP - LAA)
Cueto was called up from AAA to make a start for the Angels on Wednesday. Cueto threw 6.1 innings while allowing three runs and striking out one. Hans Crouse returned to AAA. Jose Cisnero was released.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto (SP - LAD)
Yamamoto threw a simulated game on Wednesday, his second during rehab. He will throw another this weekend before he begins a rehab assignment.
Jake Fraley (OF - CIN)
Fraley was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup with a right knee sprain. He will undergo further testing, but for now, he is considered day-to-day.
Miguel Rojas (SS - LAD)
Rojas was scratched from Wednesday’s lineup with a sore hamstring. He’s expected to be back in the lineup for the Dodgers' next game. Tommy Edman played SS with Rojas out.
Tyler Glasnow (SP - LAD)
Glasnow has yet to resume throwing since he landed on the IL. The Dodgers said Glasnow will miss more than the minimum 15 games.
Blake Treinen (RP - LAD)
Treinen was activated from the IL on Wednesday. Ben Casparius was sent back to AAA.
J.P. Crawford (SS - SEA)
Crawford has been on the IL with a fractured finger. He began swinging a bat on Wednesday and could start a rehab assignment this weekend.
