MLB News & Notes: August 18
Catch up on the news from Sunday with the fantasy news that follows.
Starling Marte (OF - NYM)
The Mets activated Marte from the IL on Sunday after spending nearly two months on the IL with a knee injury. Ben Gamel was DFA’d to make room on the roster.
Cade Povich (SP - BAL)
Povich was great in his start on Saturday, but on Sunday, he was sent back to AAA. He was apparently called up to give the starting rotation an extra day of rest. Colin Selby was recalled from AAA to add bullpen depth.
Justin Verlander (SP - HOU)
Verlander went through a bullpen on Sunday, and it went well, so he will return to the Astros rotation to start on Wednesday. We do not know who will be the odd man out in the Astros rotation, but it seems to be Spencer Arrighetti. The Astros could go with a six-man rotation as well. We shall see.
Brent Honeywell (RP - LAD)
Honeywell served himself well for the Dodgers, but that didn’t matter as he was DFA’d on Sunday. Ben Casparius was recalled from AAA to take Honeywell’s spot in the bullpen,
Max Muncy (1B,3B - LAD)
Muncy is expected to be activated from the IL on Monday. He has been out for some time but appears ready to return after a week of rehab. This move also coincides with Freddie Freeman needing a CT scan on his finger, which could force Freeman to miss some time.
Alex Bregman (3B - HOU)
Bregman was once again out of the Astros lineup on Sunday as he’s nursing an injured elbow. Bregman is expected to return on Monday.
Dany Jimenez (RP - OAK)
Jimenez was activated from the IL on Sunday. As the corresponding move, Austin Adams was placed on the IL with right elbow tightness.
Nolan Jones (OF - COL)
Jones was activated from the IL after being out with an injured back for a few weeks. Hunter Goodman was sent back to AAA.
Amed Rosario (2B,SS,OF - CIN)
Rosario was DFA’d by the Dodgers earlier this week, and on Sunday, the Reds claimed Rosario off waivers. Adding Rosario could signal a longer stint on the IL for Matt McLain.
Isaac Paredes (1B,3B - CHC)
Paredes was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with right shoulder discomfort.
Leo Jimenez (2B,SS - TOR)
Jimenez left Saturday’s game with a knee injury, and he was out of Sunday’s lineup as the soreness lingers. Jimenez is day-to-day.
Yandy Diaz (1B,3B - TB)
Diaz left Sunday’s game after getting hit in the arm. He’s currently day-to-day with a bruised forearm.
Victor Mederos (RP - LAA)
Mederos was recalled from High-A on Sunday. He will add bullpen depth for the Angels. Jose Cisnero was DFA’d.
Jasson Dominguez (OF - NYY)
Dominguez was added to the Yankees roster as a 27th man for their game in Williamsport. Dominguez started, hitting 5th, and went 0-4 with three strikeouts.
Riley Greene (OF - DET)
Greene was added to the Tigers roster as the 27th man on Sunday. He hit second and went 0-4 with two strikeouts.
Brandon Nimmo (OF - NYM)
Nimmo left Sunday’s game after injuring himself on a swing.
Ha-Seong Kim (2B,SS,3B - SD)
Kim left Sunday’s game after a head-first dive that apparently looked to injure his shoulder. After the game, he was diagnosed with a jammed right shoulder, and Kim will undergo an MRI on Monday.
Pete Fairbanks (RP - TB)
Fairbanks left Sunday’s game with an apparent injury. After the game, Fairbanks was diagnosed with a lat strain, and the Rays said he would likely head to the IL. There will likely be a closer committee while Fairbanks is out, consisting of Edwin Uceta, Garrett Cleavinger, and Manuel Rodriguez.
Ketel Marte (2B - ARI)
Marte was removed from Sunday’s game as he reaggravated his ankle injury. This has been a common theme this week, and an IL stint will likely be coming Marte’s way.
Austin Riley (3B - ATL)
Riley left Sunday’s start after getting hit in the hand by a pitch. X-rays and a CT scan were inconclusive, and Riley will undergo further testing on Monday. The fact it’s inconclusive does not bode well for Riley and an IL stint could be around the corner.
Reynaldo Lopez (SP - ATL)
The Braves made it official that Lopez will return from the IL and make the start on Tuesday. This sets Lopez up for a 2-step this week against the Phillies and Nats.
Connor Norby (2B - MIA)
The Marlins are expected to recall Norby from AAA on Monday.
Tarik Skubal (SP - DET)
After another great start on Sunday, AJ Hinch said it could be Skubal’s last start of the season. Saying the team would monitor Skubal’s workload for the rest of the season. Definitely a situation worth monitoring.
