MLB News & Notes: August 15
Catch up on the news from Thursday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Christian Yelich (OF - MIL)
There has not been any news on Yelich and his back injury of late, and we found out why not. There wasn’t any good news. On Thursday, the Brewers announced that Yelich would have season-ending back surgery. Hopefully he’s back and ready to roll for all of 2025.
Coby Mayo (3B - BAL)
After hitting .059 in just 20 plate appearances, Mayo was sent back to AAA. Ramon Urias was playing over Mayo, so there was no need to keep him on the bench, as it’s better for Mayo to get regular at-bats in AAA. Livan Soto was recalled to take Mayo’s spot on the roster.
Elias Diaz (C - COL)
The Rockies are going full Rockies as they placed Diaz on outright waivers. They did not trade him, apparently because he was injured, but now they will move on from Diaz as their catcher. Diaz is hitting .270 with five home runs over 84 games this season. Jacob Stallings and Hunter Goodman are expected to share catching duties.
Julio Rodriguez (OF - SEA)
JRod left Wednesday’s game as he reaggravated his ankle injury. He was out of Thursday’s lineup and is currently day-to-day.
Will Warren (SP - NYY)
After a spot start on Wednesday, Warren was sent back to AAA. The Yankees had the day off, so no corresponding move has been announced yet. We do know Clarke Schmidt is close to returning.
Willie Calhoun (1B,OF - LAA)
Calhoun was DFA’d by the Angels on Thursday. Ending another failed experiment for the Angels.
Max Scherzer (SP - TEX)
Scherzer recently received an injection in his shoulder to help with a nerve issue. He’s feeling better now, and Scherzer will throw a bullpen on Friday.
Liam Hendriks (RP - BOS)
Hendriks will begin a rehab assignment on Sunday. It’s expected to be a lengthy rehab assignment with the hopes of Hendriks returning in September.
Randy Rodriguez (RP - SF)
Rodriguez was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation. Spencer Bivens was recalled from AAA.
Louie Varland (SP - MIN)
After making a spot start on Wednesday, Varland was sent back to AAA. Ronny Henriquez was recalled from AAA.
Byron Buxton (OF - MIN)
Buxton’s hip has not repsoned to treatment as hoped, so he’ll head to the IL. Edouard Julien was recalled from AAA.
Trey Sweeney (SS - DET)
Sweeney will be promoted on Friday to make his MLB debut for the Tigers. Sweeney was acquired from the Dodgers in the Jack Flaherty trade. Sweeney was hitting .257 over 107 games at AAA with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases.
Jace Jung (3B - DET)
The Tigers are staying busy. Not only will Sweeney get promoted on Friday for his MLB Debut, but Jung will also. Jung is hitting .258 over 95 minor league games with 15 home runs and three stolen bases. It appears the Tigers are ready to see what they have with some of their young kids before the 2025 season.
Bobby Miller (SP - LAD)
Miller was scratched from his minor league start on Thursday. The reason is not injury; the Dodgers may need pitching help this weekend, and they want Miller to be available.
Jose Trevino (C - NYY)
Trevino was activated from the IL on Thursday, and he’s expected to back-up Austin Wells, who has been on fire at the plate. Carlos Narvaez was sent back to AAA.
Jorge Soler (OF - ATL)
Soler left Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury. He underwent an MRI on Thursday and it revealed a mild hamstring strain. He’s currently day-to-day.
Cooper Criswell (SP - BOS)
Criswell will return to the Boston rotation and make the start on Friday.
Anthony Bender (RP - MIA)
Bender was placed on the IL. Emmanuel Ramirez was recalled from AAA.
