MLB News & Notes: August 12
Catch up on the news from Monday with the fantasy impacts that follow.
Mookie Betts (2B,SS,OF - LAD)
Betts was activated from the IL on Monday. He homered in his return. Amed Rosario was DFA’d by the Dodgers.
Brayan Bello (SP - BOS)
Bello was activated from the paternity list on Monday. James Paxton was placed on the IL with a right calf strain. The MRI revealed a bad strain of the calf and Paxton hopes to return this season.
Joe Musgrove (SP - SD)
Musgrove was activated from the IL on Monday. Carl Edwards Jr. was DFA’d. Musgrove threw 4.1 innings in his return on 63 pitches while striking out one and not allowing a run.
DL Hall (SP - MIL)
Hall was sent back to AAA after his start on Sunday, a surprise to fantasy players like myself. Bryan Hudson was activated from the IL to take Hall’s spot on the roster. One would think that Hall won’t be down for long.
Junior Caminero (3B - TB)
We have been waiting for this all season, and it’s finally happening. Caminero will be promoted on Tuesday to finally join the Rays. Over 59 games at AAA, Caminero hit .274 with 16 home runs and a stolen base. He should play daily for the Rays and is worth an immediate pickup.
Zebby Mathews (SP - MIN)
The Twins are calling up one of their top pitching prospects in Mathews. He’s scheduled to make the start on Tuesday. Mathews made 17 starts between High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A this season. He racked up a 2.60 ERA with 114 strikeouts over 97 innings. More impressively, Mathews only walked 7 for a 28.6% K-BB. Mathews has five pitches and commands them all well. He could be a fun FAAB target this weekend.
Andres Chaparro (3B - WAS)
The Nats will call Chaparro up on Tuesday. He was traded to the Nats from the DBacks for Dylan Floro. Chaparro has spent eight seasons in the minors, but this year, he’s hitting .328 over 105 games with 23 home runs. He should get some run with the Nats, which could correlate to fantasy goodness.
Jordan Walker (OF - STL)
Walker was recalled from AAA, while Matt Carpenter was placed on the IL with a lower back strain. Over 78 games at AAA, Walker was hitting .257 with nine home runs and four stolen bases. We’ll see if Walker can figure things out this time. The Cardinals outfield is crowded and it may just be a platoon situation.
Nathan Eovaldi (SP - TEX)
Eovaldi is battling an oblique injury, but the Rangers think he’ll make a start this weekend versus the Twins.
Yu Darvish (SP - SD)
Darvish has been away from the Padres for some time to handle a personal issue. On Sunday, he threw a live batting practice session as he attempted to return to the bigs after his long layoff.
Jarren Duran (OF - BOS)
Duran was suspended for two games after his derogatory comments to a fan in Sunday’s game.
Reynaldo Lopez (SP - ATL)
Lopez will make a rehab start at AAA on Tuesday. If all goes well, he should return to the Braves rotation for his next start.
A.J. Minter (RP - ATL)
Minter was placed on the IL with left hip inflammation. Dylan Lee was recalled from AAA.
Will Wagner (INF - TOR)
Wagner was called up by the Jays on Monday to make his MLB debut. He was acquired in the Yusei Kikuchi trade from the Astros. Luis De Los Santos returned to AAA. Wagner was 3-4 in his debut with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.
Ben Brown (SP - CHC)
Brown has missed two months with a neck strain and has now been shut down from throwing, likely ending his season.
Bradley Blalock (SP - COL)
Blalock was called up from Double-A to make his MLB debut versus the DBacks. Josh Rogers returned to AAA. Blalock was solid in his debut, throwing 5.2 innings while allowing three runs and striking out four.
Kris Bryant (OF - COL)
Bryant was placed on the IL with a lower back strain. Jordan Beck was recalled from AAA. Since returning to AAA on July 23, Beck is hitting .329 with three home runs and one stolen base over 17 games.
Ryne Nelson (SP - ARI)
With the DBacks starting rotation healthy, Nelson could be used out of the bullpen. He may pitch behind Jordan Montgomery on Wednesday. If Nelson is not needed on Wednesday, then he’ll likely start on Friday.
Ketel Marte (2B - ARI)
Marte left Monday’s game after reaggravating an ankle injury he suffered on Saturday. He will undergo further testing. He’s day-to-day for now.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. (OF - NYY)
Chisholm left Monday’s game with an injured elbow. An injury he suffered sliding into home plate. X-rays were negative after the game and he’ll undergo further testing on Tuesday. For now, he’s day-to-day.
Logan O’Hoppe (C - LAA)
O’Hoppe left Monday’s game with right knee soreness. He will undergo further testing. For now, O’Hoppe is day-to-day. The Angels said O’Hoppe was removed as a precautionary move and they expect him to play on Tuesday.
